My workout with 80 and 90 somethings...

work out

It was 5:30 AM. I had enough time to do some training before my flight left. As I was headed to the gym I heard, “Mind if I join you?”. That was my 80-something father dressed and ready to workout with me. Awesome I thought. We go to the gym and start with the warm up. Great. Next we do some mobility drills. Wonderful. Now on to the strength portion. Fantastic. As my dad completed his training, I noticed an older gentlemen training, who looked very fit and strong. I had to talk to him. “How many days a week to you workout?,” I asked. Slight pause. “I have been working out every single day for the past 50 years,” he said. Incredible. “I’m 90 years old.” Are you kidding me?! “I’m addicted to it. I don’t feel good if I miss a day. I don’t have anything wrong with me. I don’t have high blood pressure and am not on any medications”. AMEN. As I was finishing up this wonderful conversation, my 80-something mother comes into the gym to train. Fantastic… Over the years I have had the opportunity to see and visit the elderly. Without question, those that are sharp and active have some fitness routine. They look happy and are able to adapt to their situation. Moving daily is vital to everyone not just the elderly. The sooner you start and maintain a healthy lifestyle the easier it will be as you get older. As we know this is inevitable but the degree to which we age and our quality of life is in part due to the decisions we make. Decisions is the operative word here. It is within our power to change our situation if need be and make healthy lifestyle choices. As I mentioned, much easier to maintain a healthy lifestyle if we start at an early age. Make that part of your family goals. What example are you setting? What could you do together as a family to improve your health? Busy with work? How can you incorporate just a small amount of time to move and be active? Doesn’t take much time. The key is to be consistent and make it a part of your life, not a separate component that repeatedly gets placed on the back burner. Some of my clients include older individuals. I love to train them. They work hard and don’t complain. Ever. They are consistent and really want to improve and have the understanding of how very important a healthy lifestyle is. Are you feeling inspired? Make fitness part of your lifestyle - for life. My 5:30 AM training day - did I get a good workout in? It was my best day ever...
