The most profound book I read this year is Eckhart Tolle’s, The Power of Now. It had been on my reading list for awhile and was able to finally get to it. So glad I did. The timing of this book was perfect, as I’m in my “winter”, doing reflection and contemplation. I find it nearly impossible during self-reflection not to think outside of yourself and see the grander universe around you. This book took that belief to an entirely new level. I can’t say that everyone should drop what they are doing and read this book. However, I will say everyone should have this on their bookshelf and when the time is right, invite this into your heart and mind. Although this could be identified as a spiritual book; I found a very large mindful component that will stretch and challenge you. Though the author reminds us, “But don’t try to grasp it with your mind. Don’t try to understand it. You can only know it when your mind is still…” It requires a discipline, if you will, to live in the present. When you are mindful and try to live right now, not what happened yesterday or will happen tomorrow but only in this instance, you will see how difficult and rewarding this can be. It provides an amazing explanation of what happens when we do live in the present: Become aware of a silent but powerful sense of presence. There is a certain criterion by which you can measure your success in this practice: the degree of peace that you feel within. As soon as you honor the present moment, all unhappiness and struggle dissolve, and life begins to flow with joy and ease. When you act out of the present-moment awareness, whatever you do becomes imbued with a sense of quality, care, and love - even the most simple action. And when we don’t, when we let the mind run unchecked: Anything that is done with negative energy will become contaminated by it and in time give rise to more pain, more unhappiness…As within, so without: If humans clear inner pollution, then they will also cease to create outer pollution. Whatever it is for you, seek and find a book or other inspiration to help you to find the stillness and observe the peace within. You deserve a gift to yourself, the power of now...
