Thoughtful Thursday…A cool new thing I'm trying this week...

Welcome to Thoughtful Thursday. This GreenNote Fitness newsletter mindfully gathers and distills useful information that is supportive to our journey. Hydrogenated water is one of the latest darlings in the wellness and performance arena. I recently purchased the reportedly most powerful molecular hydrogen tablets available. Dropping my two tablets in eight ounces of room temperature water, I watched the nano bubbles float to the surface.

These tablets create a potent intracellular antioxidant support to neutralize oxidative stress and inflammation. Additionally, the hydrogenated water has magnesium, an essential mineral for the body.

A team in Japan discovered that inhaled hydrogen gas could act as an antioxidant and protect the brain from free radicals. That lead to more research and the concept of drinking hydrogenated water - quite popular in Japan and referred to as “Shin’nooru solution”. Now popular in the biohacking and longevity realm, hydrogenated enriched water purports to have many health benefits. My first introduction to the concept of hydrogenated enriched water was through my course work at Kion University. Many of my cohorts reported improvement in energy and clarity. Some even said that it had restorative benefits after an evening of celebration of unlimited libation consumption.

Did I notice a calm, focused energy? Did it help me with my sleep?

First a brief introduction into what is hydrogenated water. It is water that has extra hydrogen gas added it to through several means. Essentially it is loaded with hydrogen molecules. Molecular hydrogen fights free radicals in your body and protects your cells from the effects of oxidative stress. As Dr. Perricone explains, “It helps turn your cells into an 'antioxidant factory’.” He and other supporters of hydrogenated water say that drinking it can give you more energy, slow the aging process (including its effects on your skin), and even speed muscle recovery after a workout.

Here is a brief overview of hydrogenated water benefits:

  • Neuroprotective

  • Excellent antioxidant

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Protects organs

  • Lowers cholesterol and blood sugar

  • Improves a wide variety of diseases

What do biohackers and longevity experts say?

Several months ago, I discovered that molecular hydrogen significantly reduces oxidative stress and maintains very high levels of powerful antioxidants like glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase. Not only that, but it also contains a host of anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, and anti-allergy benefits.

This all sounds pretty good to me so I ordered my hydrogen rich tablets from the company, Trusii. It’s not cheap but with a discount I was able to nab, I thought it would be worth a go. With my two bottles of hydrogen tablets in hand, I watched this video to ensure I would be consuming this correctly.

I dropped the two tablets in the water and let them dissolve. The bubbly, cloudy water looked a bit like a glass of Alka Seltzer. I drank this cloudy mixture as per the instructions. Did I have a calm, focused energy boost? The morning that I first took the tablets was a “mega Spring-cleaning bonanza” at my house. I worked on cleaning, purging, organizing from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM…without stopping. I didn’t sit down once. That evening of that same “bonanza” day, I took two more tablets. This was an hour before bed. After a short time after drinking my “potion”, I felt very calm and relaxed. May have been the important mineral magnesium working.

Before my workout the next day I also drank the hydrogenated water. Claims are that it helps you recover faster. So far so good. As with most things, consistency is key. I’m going to continue taking these tablets for at least seven days and notice how I feel. The benefit alone of getting magnesium is a huge help. I am hopeful that the reportedly powerful antioxidants that reduces stress and inflammation are at play.

Stay tuned for more as I monitor my own N=1 experiment.

Enjoy your journey,

Lisa Schaffer
